Before you label someone 'difficult,' ask yourself one question: did you coach before you counseled? Did you counsel before you corrected?

Most performance problems that end in corrective action, or worse, termination, started as something smaller that was misdiagnosed, mismanaged, or ignored until it became something that could not be ignored. The employee who is now difficult was often an employee who was once capable and dissatisfied.
